Health officials in Texas have been talking a lot about the dangers of meningitis lately. But, what exactly is it and how can it affect your child?

What is Meningitis?

Meningitis is a potentially fatal illness that causes inflammation of the membranes around the brain and the spinal cord.

There are two types of meningitis; viral and bacterial. Viral meningitis is caused by a virus and is more common. In serious cases, it can cause excessive fever and seizures. Bacterial meningitis is caused by bacteria and it is more serious.

If not treated right away, brain damage and death can occur. Both types share the same symptoms and are highly contagious so it is important to see a doctor immediately if you or your child is experiencing the following symptoms:

Symptoms for Teens and Young Adults

• A stiff and painful neck and difficulty touching your chin to your chest
• Fever
• Headache
• Vomiting
• Trouble staying awake
• Seizures

Dr. Katalenas Discusses the Dangers and Importance of the Meningitis Vaccine

New Texas laws require new vaccinations for meningitis:

Texas law currently requires all students entering 7th grade to get a meningitis shot and now Texas will require all incoming college students taking on-campus classes to get the shot. The new law is in honor of Jamie Schanbuam who lost both of her legs below the knee and the majority of each finger during her battle with meningitis while a student at the University of Texas.

PCRR Participates in Meningitis Research Study for 10-18 year olds

The Pediatric Center of Round Rock is currently participating in an investigational meningitis vaccine research study for children ages 10 to 18 in the Austin area. The vaccine is for meningococcal disease type B (MnB) and your child may qualify to receive an investigational vaccine or placebo, along with other vaccines, which may be required for school. All study-related vaccines are provided at no cost, and you may also be paid up to $360.
